A Southampton medical receptionist has been prosecuted for illegally accessing patient information. The woman, Marcia Phillips, took confidential medical information about her ex-husband’s new wife. The ICO reported on her crime, noting how she breached the Data Protection Act.

In the US, a couple from the Philadelphia area have been charged with a similar crime, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported. Rafael Henriquez Polanco and Yanira Lopez were charged with stealing the identities of at least 144 people through patient records. They had paid hospital staff members to steal the victims’ personal data from hospital forms. Patients of at least two hospitals have had their identities stole through the plot, which netted the perpetrators more than $250,000.
