Johnson Tetede, a Nigerian man living in Essex, was arrested after authorities were tipped off that he was stealing mail from a communal mailbox. He was found with a bag full of stolen documents, bank cards, and cheques.
This was not the first time Tetede had been caught with stolen documents. He had been arrested and deported in 2009 and 2012, both times in cases relating to false passports. In 2009, he had tried to buy a false passport, while last year he was using a passport to swindle money from a bank.
The case shows the lengths to which some fraudsters will go, even after they’ve been caught. While it might not be possible for you to stop fraudsters from doing what they do, you can protect yourself.
By shredding sensitive documents, you can keep yourself safe. For businesses, a service such as Assured Security Shredding’s regular on-site collection can keep you on top of document safety in an easy way.
